Flat light and a covered sky today, with a helpful ripple pushed from the SSW with the glass holding level. Most of the action on Lac Caribou should come off the shallows early and the drop later. If you must go, go in the evening. Save the long walk for a better forecast. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Set in Côte-Nord, Quebec, this is Lac Caribou. Elevation runs to 347 metres. At about 34 hectares, a day is enough to walk the shoreline properly. The bank runs about 3.5 km all the way round, so one visit can cover most of it. The closest town, Baie-Comeau, is 51 km away. It is 267 km to Saguenay, the nearest city. The nearest boundary is well away, so one set of rules covers the water.
No depth figure appears in our records, so the bank has to tell you. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Open biodiversity records for Côte-Nord list logperch. County records show what lives in the area; the local agency holds the water-by-water list. Fish Lac Caribou to its features, not to its size.
Long-term averages put July at about 16°C and January near -17°C. The fishing year opens late and shuts early. Winter fishing happens on the ice here, with open water back around early May. Break-up sits around early May on average, with the water closing again about mid November. September and October fish steadily right up to the freeze. It holds true on Lac Caribou more years than not.
Nothing on record says whether the bank is open or closed. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. Public data shows nothing built here, so treat the whole approach as informal. For the perch, a small jig tipped with worm, dropped along the edges, is hard to beat. Where the road in crosses private land, ask first. A polite question at the farm gate opens more banks than anything else. The nearest alternative is Lac Rene, 1.6 km out. None of that is settled for Lac Caribou in what we hold.
