Overcast skies today, with a helpful ripple pushed from the WSW and pressure sitting still. Activity on Lac Brochet should centre on reed fringes and open pockets. A stay-home graph, with the evening as the one excuse to go. Scale down and fish slowly. The season of moving fish: stay mobile and watch for bait.

Set in Mauricie, Quebec, this is Lac Brochet. The bank is 191 metres above sea level. It runs to roughly 24 hectares — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. With about 2.3 km of edge, you can try several depths in one session. It lies lower than most water we list in Quebec. La Tuque is the closest place, 11 km off. Laurentides is 53 km and Sainte-Thècle 79 km. The nearest boundary is a fair way off.
Without a survey to go on, judge depth from how the bank falls away. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Fish documented in Mauricie include northern pike, brook trout, walleye and yellow perch. County records show the wider picture rather than this one place. At Lac Brochet light and wind decide more than tackle does.
July runs about 18°C on average, January about -16°C. Cold winters and warm summers give a wide working range. Winter fishing happens on the ice here, with open water back around late April. On the long-run averages the water opens up around late April and starts locking again about late November. Late spring and early autumn carry the year between them. The season on Lac Brochet rarely departs from it.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. No made access is recorded, so a short walk in is the likely arrangement. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Take the rules with you rather than trusting memory. Barbless rules turn up on managed water more often than not. Lac Hamelin at 5.6 km is the sensible second choice. Confirm access to Lac Brochet locally before you travel.
