Low, flat cloud sitting over the water, with a steady S wind and pressure going nowhere. Fish at Lac Bernard should hold close to inflow corners and shaded margins. The night should out-fish the rest of the day. Take the steady approach over the searching one. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Set in Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean, Quebec, this is Lac Bernard. The bank is 448 metres above sea level. Small at around 9 hectares: two anglers spread out cover most of it. The closest town, Métabetchouan, is 58 km away. Chambord lies 61 km off, Roberval another 62 km. Also on the doorstep: Lac Ubald 1 km off, Lac Orignal about 1.8 km, Lac Cerney 2 km off, Lac de la Fronde about 2.6 km and Lac de l'Aubergine 3.5 km off. No border sits close enough to matter.
Open data we checked carries no depth for this water. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Survey and observation records for Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean include northern pike, Atlantic salmon, lake whitefish and fallfish. At least one recorded species is protected in parts of its range; read the local rules before targeting anything. Lac Bernard gives up its fish to patience rather than distance.
The year swings from about -17°C in January to roughly 17°C in July. This is a two-season water: locked, then wide open. Firm cover through the cold months, then open water from early May. Ice clears near early May and comes back about mid November in a typical year. Fishing peaks soon after break-up and again before the cold returns. The season on Lac Bernard follows the weather closely.
Nothing we hold confirms whether access is permitted. We find no slipway, car park or made path within a short radius, so treat access as rough. Pike mean a wire trace, no exceptions; big spoons and jerkbaits do the searching. Read any posted signs at the access point rather than assuming. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. If the gate is shut, Lac Ubald at 1 km is the nearest alternative. None of that is settled for Lac Bernard in what we hold.
