Dull, settled light over the water, with a gentle ripple from the WSW with the barometer flat. Most of the action on Lac aux Rats should come off reed fringes and open pockets. A slow day overall; the night is the best of a quiet lot. Scale down and fish slowly. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

This water sits in Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean, Quebec. The ground around here is taiga. Surface area is around 26 hectares, which gives you real water without needing a boat. The bank runs about 2.7 km all the way round, so one visit can cover most of it. The nearest place of any size is Saint-Félicien, 33 km away. Saguenay sits 119 km out, and it is the nearest city worth the name. The county line is nowhere near, so one local authority covers the water.
Depth here is unknown, so count the lead down before committing. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Species logged across Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean include northern pike, Atlantic salmon and lake whitefish. At least one recorded species is protected in parts of its range; read the local rules before targeting anything. The shape of Lac aux Rats decides where the fish sit.
Expect July near 16°C and January near -18°C on the long-run figures. The ice season is long here and the open one short. Firm cover through the cold months, then open water from early May. Ice usually gives way near early May, and forms again about mid November. The middle of summer slows a little, with dawn and dusk carrying it. Keep it in mind when planning a trip to Lac aux Rats.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Public mapping records no formal access here, so plan for a walk and soft ground. For the pike, wire up and throw larger lures along the weed edges. Read any posted signs at the access point rather than assuming. Barbless rules turn up on managed water more often than not. The nearest alternative is Lac Papillon, 0.9 km out. Confirm before you fish Lac aux Rats.
