An even grey lid over the water, with steady pressure of wind from the SSW and steady pressure. On Lac aux Foins, work points where shallow meets deep first. Everything points to the night. Take the steady approach over the searching one. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

Out in Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean, Quebec, sits Lac aux Foins. Elevation runs to 300 metres. This is a pocket water of some 5 hectares, and every part of it is reachable from the bank. The closest town, Roberval, is 15 km distant. Saguenay is the closest city, 88 km away. Other water within reach: Lac Verreau at 1.5 km, 2.9 km away is Lac a Truite, Lac Laroque at 3.1 km, 3.5 km away is Troisieme Lac and Lac des Cedres at 3.5 km. The nearest boundary is a fair way off.
No depth figure appears in our records, so the bank has to tell you. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Reported across Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean: northern pike, Atlantic salmon and lake whitefish. Several of these carry legal protection or closed seasons; the rulebook comes before the rod. The near bank of Lac aux Foins is often the one people ignore.
The seasonal spread runs -17°C to 17°C. Everything is compressed into the middle of the year. The lid usually goes in early May, which opens the strongest weeks of the year. Average temperatures cross freezing around early May in spring and again near mid November in autumn. Fishing peaks soon after break-up and again before the cold returns. On Lac aux Foins the same rules apply, with local timing.
There is no clear statement anywhere on who can fish it. Nothing is mapped in the way of a ramp or car park within a short radius. A wire trace and a big bright lure handle the pike; deep water asks for a heavier spoon. Some banks are open only from a marked point. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. If the gate is shut, Lac Verreau at 1.5 km is the nearest alternative. Treat Lac aux Foins as unsettled until someone local tells you otherwise.
