Rain colouring the margins today, with stillness over the whole water and the barometer holding steady. Give the shallows early and the drop later the first hour at Lac au Sable. Make the morning the heart of the trip. Ride the conditions while they last. Fish follow the bait in autumn, so find one to find the other.

Look for Lac au Sable in the Capitale-Nationale part of Quebec. The ground round it is mixed forest. About 5 hectares of surface, which puts the far bank inside easy sight. Laurentides lies 19 km from the water. La Tuque follows at 38 km, then Sainte-Thècle at 56 km. One jurisdiction covers this water end to end. The near end sees the visitors; the far end rarely does.
There is no recorded depth, so work from what you can see. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Species logged across Capitale-Nationale include lake sturgeon, Atlantic sturgeon and longnose sucker. Protected fish appear in the records for this area, so treat the list as information, not an invitation. Anyone new to Lac au Sable should walk it once before setting up.
The year swings from about -15°C in January to roughly 17°C in July. Fishing here follows the temperature more than the calendar. The lid arrives early and lasts until roughly late April. Break-up near late April, freeze-up near late November: that is the shape of an average year. Fishing peaks soon after break-up and again before the cold returns. Keep it in mind when planning a trip to Lac au Sable.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. You can camp 940 m off, which suits an early start. Walleye come to jigs worked slow near bottom, and to trolled crankbaits along the drops at dusk. Season dates differ by species, so read the table. Access can change hands, so last year's answer may not hold. Lac Beliveau at 0.7 km is the sensible second choice. Confirm before you fish Lac au Sable.
