Dull, settled light over the water, with air barely moving and pressure sitting still. Start the search at Lac Ambronay along points where shallow meets deep. If you must go, go in the morning. Treat it as a scouting trip with a rod in hand. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

Lac Ambronay is set in Abitibi-Témiscamingue, Quebec. Height above sea level is 383 metres. Small at around 2 hectares: two anglers spread out cover most of it. Our Abitibi-Témiscamingue list holds plenty of bigger water. Val-d'Or is the closest place, 105 km off. After that come Malartic at 118 km and Deep River at 121 km. No boundary runs near, so the local rules hold throughout.
Depth figures are not published for this one. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Across Abitibi-Témiscamingue, recorded fish include northern pike, yellow perch and walleye. Take it as the county picture rather than a promise for this water. At Lac Ambronay the water rewards a slow, careful approach.
Temperature averages peak at 17°C in July and bottom out at -16°C in January. Cold locks it up for a good stretch each year. The open season starts with the thaw, near enough early May. Break-up near early May, freeze-up near late November: that is the shape of an average year. June through September is the settled part of the year, with the shoulders busier for fish. Keep it in mind when planning a trip to Lac Ambronay.
Our records carry no access rule either way. The map shows no ramp or car park nearby, so this is a walk-in water. A wire trace and a big bright lure handle the pike; deep water asks for a heavier spoon. Take the rules with you rather than trusting memory. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. Should this one be busy, Lac Eumolpe is 0.8 km off. What applies at Lac Ambronay may have changed since it was mapped.
