Solid cloud cover today, with a stiffish breeze from the SW and no real change in pressure. On Lac Altherr, work the seam between weed and open water first. A hard day on paper; the morning edges the rest. Go lighter and slower than usual. Shortening days concentrate the feeding into fewer hours.

The Nord-du-Québec entry here is Lac Altherr, in Quebec. The surface lies 395 metres up. The water covers some 64 hectares, so pick a bank rather than trying to cover it all. The shoreline runs about 12 km, so it pays to pick a stretch and stay with it. The nearest place of any size is Lebel-sur-Quévillon, 71 km away. Beyond it, Waswanipi at 88 km and Senneterre at 109 km. Rules here are straightforward: one set of provincial rules.
Without a survey to go on, judge depth from how the bank falls away. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Reported across Nord-du-Québec: Arctic charr, brook trout and lake trout. Records at county level tell you what is around, not what is stocked here. Take Lac Altherr a stretch at a time.
Averages here run 17°C at the top of summer and -19°C at the bottom of winter. This is a two-season water: locked, then wide open. Winter fishing happens on the ice here, with open water back around early May. From about early May to around mid November, expect open water on the long-run figures. May into June fishes hardest, and September gives a second good stretch before the lid returns. Time your trip to Lac Altherr by conditions rather than dates.
We hold no note on access for this one. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. No made access appears within a short radius, so plan to park on a verge and walk. For the trout, small spinners and a box of nymphs cover both approaches. Where access is informal, keep it that way by behaving. Some ground is open by custom rather than by right, so tread carefully. Lac Betty, 3 km away, makes the obvious fallback. Check the position on Lac Altherr before loading the car.
