Rain on and off through the day, with a kind S breeze on the water with a settled glass. Fish at Lac a Jim should hold close to the weed line and any gaps in it. The night carries the best of the day. Make the first hour count and build on it. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Lac a Jim is an Outaouais water, in Quebec. The surface lies 199 metres up. The water covers some 39 hectares, so pick a bank rather than trying to cover it all. Bank access stretches around 3.5 km in total. It ranks high for size among our Outaouais listings. Nearest town is Maniwaki, 15 km off. Then Saint-Boniface, 17 km, and Mont-Laurier, 26 km. It sits well inside its county, with no border complications.
Depth here is unknown, so count the lead down before committing. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Records held for Outaouais cover pumpkinseed, yellow perch, smallmouth bass, rainbow smelt and Iowa darter. It is the county picture; the agency list is water-specific. Fish Lac a Jim where the bottom changes rather than where it looks deep.
Climate records put July near 18°C and January near -14°C. Winter puts a hard lid on this one. The open season starts with the thaw, near enough late April. The open-water window runs from around late April to about late November in an average year. Early summer and early autumn carry the open-water season. Lac a Jim runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. Mapping shows an empty shoreline: no ramp, no jetty, no marked entry. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Check locally before you travel, because a wasted drive is a long one. A polite question at the farm gate opens more banks than anything else. Lac Marois at 2.9 km is the sensible second choice. For Lac a Jim in particular, ask before you travel.
