An even grey lid over the water, with a busy SSW wind on the open water with a settled glass. On Lac a Ernest, work the calm side of the wind first. Make the night the heart of the trip. Fish tidy and take what the day gives. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Out in Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean, Quebec, sits Lac an Ernest. Taiga runs right down to the water. The water covers some 12 hectares, so pick a bank rather than trying to cover it all. There is roughly 3.0 km of shoreline here, which is a short walk end to end. Saint-Prime is the closest town at 35 km. The nearest city of size is Saguenay, 117 km away. The county line is nowhere near, so one local authority covers the water.
There is no recorded depth, so work from what you can see. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean records list northern pike, Atlantic salmon, lake whitefish and fallfish among the fish reported. Protected fish appear in the records for this area, so treat the list as information, not an invitation. At Lac an Ernest the first feature you find is worth twenty minutes.
Averages move between -18°C in January and 16°C in July. This is a two-season water: locked, then wide open. The lid usually sets by midwinter and gives way around early May. Average temperatures cross freezing around early May in spring and again near mid November in autumn. The strong weeks are the first after break-up and the last before the freeze. It sets the rhythm of the year at Lac an Ernest.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Nothing is listed nearby for parking or launching a boat. Pike mean a wire trace, no exceptions; big spoons and jerkbaits do the searching. Check locally before you travel, because a wasted drive is a long one. A polite question at the farm gate opens more banks than anything else. Lac de la Moelle, 0.7 km away, makes the obvious fallback. Signs at Lac an Ernest carry more weight than any list.
