An even grey lid over the water, with the surface near flat and steady pressure. Activity on Zigzag Lake should centre on windblown banks where food collects. Little to get excited about, though the middle of the day holds a sliver of promise. Downsize everything and pick the calmest water. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

You will find Zigzag Lake in Timiskaming District, Ontario. This is mixed forest country. It runs to roughly 45 hectares — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. The perimeter runs near 9.0 km, so plan the walk before you start. Kirkland Lake sits 62 km from the bank. Then Englehart, 66 km, and Timmins, 81 km. No border sits close enough to matter.
Depth is not on record here, so the bank has to tell you. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Records held for Timiskaming District cover brook trout, northern pike, yellow perch, Iowa darter and walleye. County data is a starting point rather than a guarantee. On Zigzag Lake a short move beats a long cast.
Averages here run 17°C at the top of summer and -17°C at the bottom of winter. The freeze arrives properly here and holds. Winter locks it down, and early May brings it back. Going by climate averages, expect open water from about early May until roughly mid November. Spring is short and heavy here; autumn is longer and steadier. On Zigzag Lake the same rules apply, with local timing.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. No launch point is recorded nearby, so this is a bank water unless you carry a boat in. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Read any posted signs at the access point rather than assuming. Where parking is tight, arriving early solves most problems. Pardich Lake, 1.3 km away, makes the obvious fallback. Check the position at Zigzag Lake before loading the car.
