Wolf Lake in Algoma: How and When to Fish It

• Overview

  Wolf Lake is one of the Algoma waters in Ontario. It stands 406 metres above sea level. Surface area is around 17 hectares, which gives you real water without needing a boat. Roughly 3.4 km of bank means you can walk to a fresh area when one goes quiet. The nearest place of any size is Elliot Lake, 19 km away. After that come Blind River at 46 km and Espanola at 76 km. It sits well inside the county, so one set of rules covers it.

• Where to Fish on Wolf Lake

  Nothing we hold settles how deep this runs. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Across Algoma, recorded fish include walleye, northern pike, Iowa darter and yellow perch. These are county-wide records, so not all of them will be in this water. On Wolf Lake the first feature you find is usually worth a session.

• Seasonal Patterns

  Between January at about -12°C and July at about 18°C, the water has a wide range to work through. Expect a real winter and a strong spring after it. The open season starts with the thaw, near enough late April. From about late April to around late November, expect open water on the long-run figures. The open run goes from the thaw to the freeze, and April through October covers most of it. Time your trip to Wolf Lake by conditions rather than dates.

• Tackle & Baits

  Public sources are silent on who controls the bank. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. The map shows no ramp or car park nearby, so this is a walk-in water.
