Solid cloud cover today, with a steady WNW wind and pressure going nowhere. The productive water at Waitson Lake will be around structure within a cast of the bank. Numbers are low everywhere; the evening is the pick of them. Lower the pace and stay patient. The autumn feed-up is on; baitfish areas are the key.

Waitson Lake is a Kenora District water, Ontario side. The surface lies 301 metres up. This is sizeable water at about 1.08 sq km, and a boat opens up most of it. There is roughly 5.2 km of bank, more than one visit can cover properly. Start from Greenstone, 287 km down the road. Further out sit Geraldton (295 km) and Sioux Lookout (301 km). No border sits close enough to matter.
Depth remains unrecorded, so treat the first session as a survey. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Records held for Kenora District cover northern pike, longnose sucker, white sucker and johnny darter. These are county-wide records, so not all of them will be in this water. Take Waitson Lake a stretch at a time.
Expect July near 16°C and January near -22°C on the long-run figures. The window is narrow, and fish feed hard while it lasts. Hard water holds through the cold months, breaking up near early May. Averages suggest open water from about early May through to roughly early November. Fishing peaks soon after break-up and again before the cold returns. Anyone fishing Waitson Lake regularly works to that calendar.
Whether you may fish here is not something records settle. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Nothing built is recorded close to the bank here. A wire trace and a big bright lure handle the pike; deep water asks for a heavier spoon. Check whether a boat is allowed before you tow one. Where tickets apply, they are sold in the nearest town rather than on the bank. Should this one be busy, Corby Lake is 9.7 km off. The position on Waitson Lake is worth confirming on the day.
