Dull, settled light over the water, with a kind SSE breeze on the water with the glass holding level. The water to cover at Trout Lake is any hard bottom among the soft. The day holds up well from the day. Work the productive water thoroughly. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

Trout Lake lies within the bounds of Kenora District, Ontario. It sits at 394 metres above sea level. Around 347.42 sq km of open water: conditions change from one end to the other. Size puts it in the front rank of our Kenora District list. Head to Red Lake, 33 km away, for anything you forgot. Winnipeg sits 308 km out, and it is the nearest city worth the name. The nearest edge is a long way off, so local rules apply throughout.
No chart reached our records; the first cast is your sounding. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. Records held for Kenora District cover northern pike, longnose sucker and white sucker. Species recorded across the county may be limited to a few waters. Fish Trout Lake where the bottom changes rather than where it looks deep.
Typical July readings run about 17°C; by January the average is down near -20°C. Winter shuts the surface down for months. Firm cover through the cold months, then open water from early May. On the long-run averages the water opens up around early May and starts locking again about mid November. The shoulder weeks of the open season are the productive ones. Trout Lake runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. No made access appears within a short radius, so plan to park on a verge and walk. For the pike, wire up and throw larger lures along the weed edges. Rules differ from one water to the next round here. Some water is controlled locally without a sign saying so. Otter Lake at 11 km is the sensible second choice. For Trout Lake in particular, ask before you travel.
