A clean, cloudless night over the water, with almost no wind to speak of and steady pressure. On Top Lake, work reed fringes and open pockets first. The day holds up well from the day. Let the water tell you when to move. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

The records we hold are silent on depth, so plan to find it yourself. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Sudbury records list smallmouth bass, northern pike, yellow perch, Iowa darter and walleye among the fish reported. Species recorded across the county may be limited to a few waters. Anyone new to Top Lake should walk it once before setting up.

Break-up sits around late April on average, with the water closing again about mid November. The first weeks of open water and the last are the ones to plan for. It sets the rhythm of the year at Top Lake.
Public data does not answer the access question here. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. No launch point is recorded nearby, so this is a bank water unless you carry a boat in. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Some banks are open only from a marked point. Fishing rules and camping rules are set separately here. Hood Lake, 1.9 km away, makes the obvious fallback. Confirm before you fish Top Lake.
