Heavy overcast holding through the day, with almost no wind to speak of with the barometer flat. Most of the action on Ton Lake should come off any hard bottom among the soft. Block out the hours from afternoon into evening. Slow down and let the fish find the bait. Fish follow the bait in autumn, so find one to find the other.

Ton Lake lies in Thunder Bay District, Ontario. It stands 438 metres above sea level. Around 70 hectares of surface means several distinct areas to work. At about 8.8 km of edge, most people work one arm at a time. It is high ground by Ontario standards. The nearest place of any size is Ignace, 111 km away. The big place round here is Thunder Bay, 185 km distant. No county line comes close, which keeps the paperwork simple.
Depth remains unrecorded, so treat the first session as a survey. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. County-wide records name cisco, blackfin cisco, rainbow smelt, bloater and shortjaw cisco. Records at this level tell you what is in the area. On Ton Lake that means starting tight and working out.
Long-term averages put July at about 17°C and January near -20°C. Seasons are distinct, and each one fishes differently. Break-up comes around early May, and the run that follows is short and strong. The open-water window runs from around early May to about mid November in an average year. Late spring and early autumn carry the year between them. It sets the rhythm of the year at Ton Lake.
No access rule appears in what we hold. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Mapping is blank for access, so scout the approach before committing the car. Keep the gear simple: light line, small hooks, split shot and a couple of proven lures. A landowner's word beats anything printed elsewhere. Where parking is tight, arriving early solves most problems. Robert Lake at 1.6 km is the sensible second choice. Check the position on Ton Lake before loading the car.
