Thin cloud passing over the water tonight, with flat calm through the day with the barometer flat. On Thom Lake, work windblown banks where food collects first. An ordinary day throughout, patience over timing. Change depth before you change anything else. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

Set in Nipissing District, Ontario, this is Thom Lake. Elevation runs to 430 metres. About 6 hectares of surface, which puts the far bank inside easy sight. On size it sits at the modest end of our Nipissing District list. For a base, Bancroft sits 41 km out. United Townships of Dysart, Dudley, Harcourt, Guilford, Harburn, Bruton, Havelock, Eyre and Clyde lies 48 km off, Eganville another 63 km. Local rules may differ a few miles either side of here.
Our records carry no depth, so judge it from the bank. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. Records held for Nipissing District cover smallmouth bass, cisco, yellow perch and pumpkinseed. County records show what lives in the area; the local agency holds the water-by-water list. Read Thom Lake before you fish it and the day goes better.
Temperature averages peak at 18°C in July and bottom out at -12°C in January. A hard winter is normal, and the thaw brings a strong few weeks. Ice-out usually falls in late April, and the weeks after it fish hardest. The season between ice runs from about late April to early December. The first weeks of open water and the last are the ones to plan for. Thom Lake fishes to that pattern most years.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Nothing is listed nearby for parking or launching a boat. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. A phone call first saves an afternoon. Where tickets apply, they are sold in the nearest town rather than on the bank. Snowshoe Lake sits 2.4 km off and takes the overflow. Ask locally about Thom Lake if anything is unclear.
