Stars out and no cloud tonight, with a persistent wind from the NW with the glass holding level. The fish at Tape Lake are likely to sit near the weed line and any gaps in it. Little to get excited about, though the middle of the day holds a sliver of promise. Downsize everything and pick the calmest water.

Tape Lake is a Thunder Bay District water, in Ontario. Around the bank it is spruce and muskeg. About 1.91 sq km, so local knowledge or a boat saves a lot of walking. Some 16 km of bank gives room to move when the wind turns. It is among the larger waters listed here for Thunder Bay District. Greenstone at 101 km is the nearest place to stop. Geraldton is 111 km away, with Longlac at 129 km. The nearest boundary is a fair way off.
Our records hold no depth for this water. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Open biodiversity records for Thunder Bay District list cisco, blackfin cisco, rainbow smelt, bloater and shortjaw cisco. These are county-wide records, so not all of them will be in this water. The near bank of Tape Lake is often the one people ignore.
Averages here run 16°C at the top of summer and -20°C at the bottom of winter. Winter runs most of the calendar, and everything worth doing happens in the gap. After early May the shallows warm and the fish move up. Ice clears near early May and comes back about mid November in a typical year. Fish feed hardest at the start and the close of the open season. Keep it in mind when planning a trip to Tape Lake.
We hold no note on access for this one. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. Mapping shows no built access close by; expect to walk in from wherever you can leave the car. A light spinning outfit with a small box of lures and some bait covers most of what swims here. Look for a notice board at the entrance. Where tickets apply, they are sold in the nearest town rather than on the bank. For a change of water, Falcon Lake is 5.8 km distant.
