An even grey lid over the water, with a steady WNW wind and no real change in pressure. Fish at Swan Lake should hold close to the seam between weed and open water. Numbers are low everywhere; the middle of the day is the pick of them. Take the small wins and call it early if it dies. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

Swan Lake is a Cochrane District water, Ontario side. The water sits 310 metres up. At some 1.20 sq km it is far too large to cover on foot in a day. Shoreline length is close to 5.7 km, and each section fishes a little differently. Size puts it in the front rank of our Cochrane District list. Kirkland Lake is the closest place, 20 km off. Englehart is 55 km and Iroquois Falls 66 km. A county line runs close by, so local bylaws can differ within a short drive.
Depth is not on record here, which means reading the ground instead. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Species logged across Cochrane District include northern pike, yellow perch and white sucker. These are county-wide records, so not all of them will be in this water. At Swan Lake the water rewards a slow, careful approach.
Seasonal averages run from -17°C in January up to 17°C in July. A short, intense season is the rule this far north. Ice-out usually falls in early May, and the weeks after it fish hardest. On average, early May opens the water and mid November closes it again. The open run goes from the thaw to the freeze, and April through October covers most of it. Swan Lake fishes to that pattern most years.
There is no clear statement anywhere on who can fish it. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Public data shows nothing built here, so treat the whole approach as informal. Where a permit is needed, the nearest town usually sells it. Where parking is tight, arriving early solves most problems. If the gate is shut, Upper Twin Lake at 2.2 km is the nearest alternative. Signs at Swan Lake carry more weight than any list.
