Fresh rain topping the water up today, with a stiffish breeze from the WNW with the barometer flat. Start the search at Swamp Lake along the shallows early and the drop later. Not a day the forecast likes; the night keeps a flicker of interest. Lower the pace and stay patient. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

Set in Cochrane District, Ontario, this is Swamp Lake. It lies 329 metres above sea level. Around 20 hectares of surface means several distinct areas to work. Bank access stretches around 2.4 km in total. The town to know is Timmins, 33 km out. Greater Sudbury sits 191 km out, and it is the nearest city worth the name. This one is safely inside the county line.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Records held for Cochrane District cover northern pike, yellow perch, white sucker, Iowa darter and logperch. Take it as the county picture rather than a promise for this water. Swamp Lake gives up its fish to patience rather than distance.
Expect July to average close to 17°C, with January the cold end at about -17°C. Cold locks it up for a good stretch each year. Firm cover through the cold months, then open water from early May. On the long-run averages the water opens up around early May and starts locking again about mid November. Right after break-up, and again as the nights sharpen, is when to go. Plan around that when you fish Swamp Lake.
The access position is unclear from public sources. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. No car park, ramp or path is recorded within easy reach of the shore. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Where the road in crosses private land, ask first. Check whether bait restrictions apply before you buy any. Banana Lake at 1.6 km is the sensible second choice. What applies at Swamp Lake may have changed since it was mapped.
