Low, flat cloud sitting over the water, with a soft WNW wind and steady pressure. Whatever swims in Sunny Lake should be near shallow cover and weed edges. The strongest window runs from the day. Stay mobile and follow the activity. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Rainy River District in Ontario is where Sunny Lake sits. It sits at 422 metres above sea level. The water covers some 48 hectares, so pick a bank rather than trying to cover it all. The edge runs 4.1 km or so, easy to work in an afternoon. The town to know is Atikokan, 57 km out. Ignace lies 65 km off, Fort Frances another 92 km. It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
Depth remains unrecorded, so treat the first session as a survey. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Fish documented in Rainy River District include northern pike, smallmouth bass, yellow perch and walleye. Records at county level tell you what is around, not what is stocked here. Sunny Lake gives up more to patience than to distance.
Between January at about -17°C and July at about 18°C, the water has a wide range to work through. Expect a real winter and a strong spring after it. Look for the thaw near late April; the fishing lifts straight after. Ice usually gives way near late April, and forms again about mid November. June through September is the settled part of the year, with the shoulders busier for fish. Sunny Lake fishes to that pattern most years.
Nothing we hold confirms whether access is permitted. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. No slipway, car park or made path shows up nearby in mapping, so treat access as rough. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Parking is often the real limit rather than the bank itself. Where parking is tight, arriving early solves most problems. Kirsten Lake, 1.7 km away, makes the obvious fallback. For Sunny Lake in particular, ask before you travel.
