Soft grey light all day today, with air barely moving with the barometer flat. Most of the action on Sump Lake should come off the seam between weed and open water. Expectations low today; if anything moves, it will be in the night. Lower the pace and stay patient. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

The Thunder Bay District entry here is Sump Lake, in Ontario. The water sits 306 metres up. At 1.61 sq km this is proper open water rather than a pond. With 5.7 km or so of shoreline, boat anglers cover ground the bank cannot. Few waters listed in Thunder Bay District are bigger. Start from Longlac, 28 km down the road. Geraldton is 44 km away, with Greenstone at 55 km. No boundary runs near, so the local rules hold throughout.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Species logged across Thunder Bay District include cisco, blackfin cisco, rainbow smelt and bloater. It is the county picture; the agency list is water-specific. Read Sump Lake for ten minutes before the first cast goes out.
Temperature averages peak at 16°C in July and bottom out at -20°C in January. Everything is compressed into the middle of the year. Expect a solid lid for months and a thaw around early May. Ice clears near early May and comes back about mid November in a typical year. The shoulder weeks of the open season are the productive ones. Expect Sump Lake to follow that timing.
Access is not recorded for this water. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Mapping records no facilities at all near this water. One rod, a handful of hooks and floats, and a few small lures are enough for this water. Check whether a boat is allowed before you tow one. Night access is frequently treated as a separate matter. Lower Bawk Lake at 2.8 km is the sensible second choice. For Sump Lake, the notice at the access point is the final word.
