Stars out and no cloud tonight, with just enough SSW wind to ripple the surface and no real change in pressure. Most of the action on Sturgeon Lake should come off windblown banks where food collects. Numbers are low everywhere; the morning is the pick of them. Go lighter and slower than usual.

Set in Renfrew County, Sturgeon Lake is an Ontario water. Lake country bush runs right down to the water. This is sizeable water at about 3.37 sq km, and a boat opens up most of it. At about 25 km of edge, most people work one arm at a time. It is among the larger waters listed here for Renfrew County. The nearest town is Chalk River, 5.5 km away. The big place round here is Gatineau, 143 km distant. The boundary is near enough that local access rules are worth double-checking.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Renfrew County records list smallmouth bass, pumpkinseed and yellow perch among the fish reported. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. At Sturgeon Lake the water rewards a slow, careful approach.
Climate normals give 19°C for July and -13°C for January. The year runs cold to warm and back, with clear transitions. Hard water holds through the cold months, breaking up near late April. Break-up sits around late April on average, with the water closing again about early December. Fishing peaks soon after break-up and again before the cold returns. Plan around that when you fish Sturgeon Lake.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. No slipway, car park or made path shows up nearby in mapping, so treat access as rough. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Where access is informal, keep it that way by behaving. Keep proof of licence with you rather than in the car. If the gate is shut, Gwatkin Lake at 1.4 km is the nearest alternative. Rules at Sturgeon Lake are worth checking on the day.
