A closed sky with even light today, with the water lying quiet with a settled glass. Expect most activity at Straight Lake around shallow cover and weed edges. Expectations low today; if anything moves, it will be in the morning. Fish the best hour hard and keep the rest short. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

You will find Straight Lake in Timiskaming District, Ontario. Height above sea level is 293 metres. With some 31 hectares of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. Bank access stretches around 3.5 km in total. Haileybury at 20 km is the nearest place to stop. For a city, Greater Sudbury is 128 km off. There is no boundary nearby to worry about.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Across Timiskaming District, recorded fish include brook trout, northern pike and yellow perch. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. The near bank of Straight Lake is often the one people ignore.
Climate normals give 18°C for July and -16°C for January. A full turn of seasons, with the strongest sport on either side of summer. The lid usually goes in late April, which opens the strongest weeks of the year. Climate figures give an open season running late April to late November. May into June fishes hardest, and September gives a second good stretch before the lid returns. Keep it in mind when planning a trip to Straight Lake.
Access is not recorded for this water. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Expect a 810 m walk in from where the car goes. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Season dates differ by species, so read the table. Where the way in crosses private ground, ask first. Failing this one, try Little Blueberry Lake, 1 km away. Check the current arrangement for Straight Lake.
