A mixed sky through the night, with a gentle ripple from the SSW with the barometer flat. Most of the action on Stewart Lake should come off the weed line and any gaps in it. A long productive spell runs the day. Make the first hour count and build on it. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

Look for Stewart Lake in the Lanark County part of Ontario. The ground round it is rolling bush. Surface area is around 21 hectares, which gives you real water without needing a boat. The full circuit measures close to 1.9 km on foot. It lies lower than most water we list in Ontario. Start from Carleton Place, 16 km down the road. The big place round here is Nepean, 56 km distant. The nearest edge is a long way off, so local rules apply throughout.
Nothing we hold settles how deep this runs. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Lanark County records list pumpkinseed, rock bass and smallmouth bass among the fish reported. Protected fish appear in the records for this area, so treat the list as information, not an invitation. Read Stewart Lake before you fish it and the day goes better.
Between January at about -11°C and July at about 20°C, the water has a wide range to work through. A hard winter is normal, and the thaw brings a strong few weeks. After mid April the shallows warm and the fish move up. Climate averages put the opening at about mid April and the closing near early December. The strongest runs come at either end of the open season. Plan any trip to Stewart Lake around it.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. No made access appears within a short radius, so plan to park on a verge and walk. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Parking is often the real limit rather than the bank itself. Barbless rules turn up on managed water more often than not. The nearest alternative is Haley Lake, 3.4 km out. The position on Stewart Lake is worth confirming on the day.
