Clear air and long views across the water tonight, with a whisper of wind from the SW with a settled glass. The fish at Stedman Lake are likely to sit near the margins and the shelf beyond them. The forecast is against you; the morning is the least bad option. Treat it as a scouting trip with a rod in hand.

Look for Stedman Lake in the Thunder Bay District part of Ontario. The surface lies 465 metres up. It runs to roughly 94 hectares — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. At about 7.3 km of edge, most people work one arm at a time. By elevation it is in the upper part of our Ontario listings. Start from Atikokan, 84 km down the road. Thunder Bay is the closest city, 125 km away. It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
Depth went unrecorded, which puts the reading back on you. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. County-wide records name cisco, blackfin cisco, rainbow smelt, bloater and shortjaw cisco. County records show what lives in the area; the local agency holds the water-by-water list. Anyone new to Stedman Lake should walk it once before setting up.
Long-term averages put July at about 17°C and January near -18°C. The year runs cold to warm and back, with clear transitions. Ice fishing carries the winter, and the water opens about early May. Ice usually gives way near early May, and forms again about mid November. The shoulder weeks of the open season are the productive ones. Stedman Lake runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Formal access is not mapped, so the last stretch is likely on foot. One rod, a handful of hooks and floats, and a few small lures are enough for this water. Ask in the nearest town if you are unsure. Fishing rules and camping rules are set separately here. The nearest alternative is Hay Lake, 3.5 km out. The position on Stedman Lake is worth confirming on the day.
