Overcast skies today, with a firm WNW blow and pressure going nowhere. Whatever swims in Stangiff Lake should be near sheltered bays and points. Little to get excited about, though the night holds a sliver of promise. Lower the pace and stay patient. Shortening days concentrate the feeding into fewer hours.

Stangiff Lake is one of the Sudbury waters in Ontario. The land about it is northern bush. It measures about 27 hectares, which is a comfortable size for bank fishing. A shoreline of some 3.2 km keeps the choices simple. The nearest town is Chapleau, 79 km away. Then Timmins, 95 km, and Iroquois Falls, 154 km. The county line is nowhere near, so one local authority covers the water.
Nothing we hold settles how deep this runs. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Species logged across Sudbury include smallmouth bass, northern pike, yellow perch, Iowa darter and walleye. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. Stangiff Lake gives up more to patience than to distance.
On the long-term average, July reads 17°C and January reads -16°C. Cold dominates the year and the fishing works around it. Hard water holds through the cold months, breaking up near late April. The season between ice runs from about late April to mid November. Late spring and early autumn carry the year between them. It sets the rhythm of the year at Stangiff Lake.
Nothing on record says whether the bank is open or closed. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Mapping shows no built access close by; expect to walk in from wherever you can leave the car. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Provincial rules still apply whatever the bank status. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. Gibb Lake at 1.5 km is the sensible second choice. Nothing on Stangiff Lake should be assumed from this page alone.
