Open sky and sharp air tonight, with a gentle ripple from the W with a settled glass. On Spectacle Lake, work the shaded margin through bright spells first. Little to get excited about, though the middle of the day holds a sliver of promise. Downsize everything and pick the calmest water.

Look for Spectacle Lake in Algoma, Ontario. It stands 341 metres above sea level. It measures about 39 hectares, which is a comfortable size for bank fishing. Some 5.1 km of bank gives room to move when the wind turns. Hornepayne sits 19 km from here and is the nearest stop. Further out sit Manitouwadge (76 km) and Hearst (109 km). This one is safely inside the county line.
Our records carry no depth, so judge it from the bank. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Reported across Algoma: walleye, northern pike and Iowa darter. It is the county picture; the agency list is water-specific. Read Spectacle Lake before you fish it and the day goes better.
Temperature averages peak at 16°C in July and bottom out at -18°C in January. Cold dominates the calendar on water this far north. Ice fishing carries the winter, and the water opens about early May. Climate figures give an open season running early May to mid November. Fish feed hardest at the start and the close of the open season. It holds true on Spectacle Lake more years than not.
There is no clear statement anywhere on who can fish it. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. We find no slipway, car park or made path within a short radius, so treat access as rough. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Parking space is the usual limit rather than the bank itself. Where parking is tight, arriving early solves most problems. Whitepine Lake, 1.1 km away, makes the obvious fallback. Check the position at Spectacle Lake before loading the car.
