Rain moving through today, with an easy breeze from the W and steady pressure. Whatever swims in South Lake should be near points where shallow meets deep. Little to get excited about, though the morning holds a sliver of promise. Fish the best hour hard and keep the rest short. Shortening days concentrate the feeding into fewer hours.

South Lake is listed under Sudbury, Ontario. What surrounds it is pine and birch. With some 17 hectares of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. The edge runs 2.0 km or so, easy to work in an afternoon. The nearest town is Rayside-Balfour, 35 km away. Further out sit Dowling (36 km) and Capreol (38 km). The nearest boundary is a fair way off.
Our records carry no depth, so judge it from the bank. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. County-wide records name smallmouth bass, northern pike, yellow perch and Iowa darter. It is the county picture; the agency list is water-specific. On South Lake the obvious spot is not always the productive one.
Expect July near 18°C and January near -15°C on the long-run figures. Winter shuts the surface down for months. Once it clears, about late April, the fishing comes on quickly. On the long-run averages the water opens up around late April and starts locking again about late November. Late spring and early autumn carry the year between them. Time your trip to South Lake by conditions rather than dates.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. No slipway, car park or made path shows up nearby in mapping, so treat access as rough. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Provincial rules still apply whatever the bank status. Where parking is tight, arriving early solves most problems. The nearest alternative is North Lake, 0.5 km out.
