A rainy spell sitting over the area, with a busy WNW wind on the open water with the barometer flat. Start the search at Smock Lake along the shaded margin through bright spells. Little to get excited about, though the middle of the day holds a sliver of promise. Downsize everything and pick the calmest water.

Smock Lake is a Kenora District water, in Ontario. It stands 391 metres above sea level. With some 79 hectares of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. The margin runs to about 6.4 km in total. You are 33 km from Sioux Lookout. It is 240 km to Thunder Bay, the nearest city. Also on the doorstep: Rum Lake at 1.9 km, Pen Lake 2.1 km away, Snag Lake at 4.1 km, Pear Lake 5.8 km away and Yonde Lake at 5.9 km. It sits well inside the county, so one set of rules covers it.
We hold no survey for this water; read the slope of the shoreline instead. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. County-wide records name northern pike, longnose sucker, white sucker, johnny darter and logperch. County data is a starting point rather than a guarantee. The near bank of Smock Lake is often the one people ignore.
Long-term averages put July at about 18°C and January near -19°C. A solid cap is the normal state through winter. Once it clears, about late April, the fishing comes on quickly. Ice usually gives way near late April, and forms again about mid November. Late spring and early autumn carry the year between them. The season on Smock Lake rarely departs from it.
Public sources are silent on who controls the bank. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. Mapping is blank for access, so scout the approach before committing the car. For the pike, wire up and throw larger lures along the weed edges. Where access is informal, keep it that way by behaving. Close seasons apply to some species and not others. Rum Lake at 1.9 km is the sensible second choice. Rules at Smock Lake are worth checking on the day.
