Solid cloud cover today, with a light WSW breeze and the barometer holding steady. Give the shaded margin through bright spells the first hour at Smith Lake. A grinding day likely, with the morning worth the effort if any is. Quiet tactics only; the fish will not chase today. Shortening days concentrate the feeding into fewer hours.

Nipissing District in Ontario is where Smith Lake sits. The bank is 307 metres above sea level. At about 37 hectares, a day is enough to walk the shoreline properly. The bank runs about 4.7 km all the way round, so one visit can cover most of it. West Nipissing at 47 km is the nearest place to stop. Sturgeon Falls is 47 km away, with Markstay-Warren at 54 km. It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
Depth is unmeasured here, so let the shoreline guide you. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. County-wide records name smallmouth bass, cisco, yellow perch, pumpkinseed and rock bass. Records at this level tell you what is in the area. On Smith Lake the obvious spot is not always the productive one.
The warmest month averages 18°C, the coldest about -14°C. The middle months are generous; the ends are demanding. The lid usually goes in late April, which opens the strongest weeks of the year. In an average year the thaw lands around late April and the freeze near late November. September and October fish steadily right up to the freeze. At Smith Lake the season follows that pattern closely.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. There is no recorded infrastructure here; expect to find your own way in. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. A phone call first saves an afternoon. Some water is controlled locally without a sign saying so. The nearest alternative is Surveyor Lake, 2 km out. Where Smith Lake is concerned, a local answer beats a written one.
