Broken cloud drifting past the moon tonight, with a decent NW wind working the banks and the barometer holding steady. Slate Lake should fish best around points where shallow meets deep today. A stay-home graph, with the middle of the day as the one excuse to go. Downsize everything and pick the calmest water.

Slate Lake sits within Thunder Bay District in Ontario. Beyond the shoreline you have spruce and muskeg. Roughly 38 hectares: a morning covers one end, an afternoon the other. Around 3.1 km of margin, front to back. Greenstone lies 54 km from the water. The big place round here is Thunder Bay, 232 km distant. Rules here are straightforward: one set of provincial rules.
There is no recorded depth, so work from what you can see. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Thunder Bay District records list cisco, blackfin cisco, rainbow smelt, bloater and shortjaw cisco among the fish reported. Read it as a county summary, not a water-by-water list. On Slate Lake the obvious spot is not always the productive one.
Long-run averages give July about 16°C and January about -20°C. Open water is the exception rather than the rule here. Ice is part of the season here, ending near early May. The open-water window runs from around early May to about mid November in an average year. The strongest runs come at either end of the open season. On Slate Lake the same rules apply, with local timing.
Our records carry no access rule either way. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Mapping shows no built access close by; expect to walk in from wherever you can leave the car. One rod, a handful of hooks and floats, and a few small lures are enough for this water. Ask in the nearest town if you are unsure. Some ground is open by custom rather than by right, so tread carefully. Knucklethumb Lake sits 2.4 km off and takes the overflow. None of that is settled for Slate Lake in what we hold.
