Cloud from horizon to horizon today, with a decent WNW wind working the banks and no real change in pressure. Whatever swims in Shoal Lake should be near sheltered bays and points. A slow day overall; the morning is the best of a quiet lot. Go lighter and slower than usual. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Shoal Lake lies in Thunder Bay District, Ontario. Beyond the shoreline you have spruce and muskeg. With some 60 hectares of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. 144 km away sits Greenstone, the nearest town. Then Geraldton, 157 km, and Nipigon, 168 km. Not far off: Reef Lake some 2.3 km off, Brush Lake the better part of 3.2 km, Blackett Lake some 4.7 km off, Selassie Lake the better part of 7 km and Haile Lake some 7.7 km off. It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
No depth figure has reached our records, which makes a plummet useful. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Records held for Thunder Bay District cover cisco, blackfin cisco and rainbow smelt. Take it as the county picture rather than a promise for this water. At Shoal Lake light and wind decide more than tackle does.
The warmest month averages 17°C, the coldest about -21°C. The year here is short and sharp: a long lid, then a burst of open water. Expect a solid lid for months and a thaw around early May. Averages suggest open water from about early May through to roughly mid November. From the thaw to midsummer the fishing improves week by week. On Shoal Lake that shapes the whole year.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. The map shows no ramp or car park nearby, so this is a walk-in water. A light spinning outfit with a small box of lures and some bait covers most of what swims here. Ask in the nearest town if you are unsure. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. Reef Lake sits 2.3 km off and takes the overflow. Nothing on Shoal Lake should be assumed from this page alone.
