Stars out and no cloud tonight, with hardly a ripple anywhere with the barometer flat. Give the seam between weed and open water the first hour at Shirtcliff Lake. The day fishes best from morning through afternoon. Pick two or three spots and rotate them. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

Morning
Shirtcliff Lake is set in Lennox and Addington County, Ontario. Everything around it is pine and birch. Roughly 18 hectares: a morning covers one end, an afternoon the other. With about 3.6 km of edge, you can try several depths in one session. It is low-lying compared with other Ontario water we list. For a base, Tweed sits 20 km out. Kingston sits 65 km out, and it is the nearest city worth the name. Two sets of local rules meet not far from this water.
There is no published depth for this one, so start shallow and work out. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Survey and observation records for Lennox and Addington County include pumpkinseed, rock bass, smallmouth bass, bluegill and yellow perch. At least one recorded species is protected in parts of its range; read the local rules before targeting anything. On Shirtcliff Lake that means starting tight and working out.
Average temperature peaks around 20°C in July and bottoms out near -10°C in January. Cold locks it up for a good stretch each year. Winter fishing happens on the ice here, with open water back around mid April. In an average year the thaw lands around mid April and the freeze near early December. Just after the ice goes and just before it returns, the fishing lifts. Plan any trip to Shirtcliff Lake around it.
Nothing we hold confirms whether access is permitted. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. The map shows no ramp or car park nearby, so this is a walk-in water. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Look for a notice board at the entrance. Some ground is open by custom rather than by right, so tread carefully. Failing this one, try Todd Lake, 0.9 km away. Where Shirtcliff Lake is concerned, a local answer beats a written one.
