Drifting cloud with clear gaps tonight, with flat calm through the day with the glass holding level. Expect most activity at Shalla Lake around the shallows early and the drop later. A hard day on paper; the night edges the rest. Scale down and fish slowly. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

In Ontario, Shalla Lake falls inside Algoma. The bank is 296 metres above sea level. The water covers some 41 hectares, so pick a bank rather than trying to cover it all. About 4.0 km of bank, so nothing stays unexplored for long. Head to Hornepayne, 32 km away, for anything you forgot. Hearst is 80 km and Manitouwadge 90 km. One jurisdiction covers this water end to end.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. County-wide records name walleye, northern pike, Iowa darter, yellow perch and white sucker. Records at county level tell you what is around, not what is stocked here. On Shalla Lake the first feature you find is usually worth a session.
Expect July near 16°C and January near -19°C on the long-run figures. The ice season is long here and the open one short. The open season starts with the thaw, near enough early May. Averages place the thaw at early May and the freeze at mid November. May into June fishes hardest, and September gives a second good stretch before the lid returns. Shalla Lake fishes to that pattern most years.
Nothing we hold confirms whether access is permitted. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Mapping shows no built access close by; expect to walk in from wherever you can leave the car. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Some banks are open only from a marked point. Keep proof of licence with you rather than in the car. Should this one be busy, Elsie Lake is 1.4 km off. Rules at Shalla Lake are worth checking on the day.
