Low, flat cloud sitting over the water, with a proper ripple driven from the WNW and no real change in pressure. Give structure within a cast of the bank the first hour at Sawmill Lake. A slow day overall; the night is the best of a quiet lot. Scale down and fish slowly. The season of moving fish: stay mobile and watch for bait.

Sawmill Lake falls in Rainy River District, part of Ontario. The bank is 439 metres above sea level. It runs to roughly 33 hectares — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. There is roughly 6.6 km of bank, more than one visit can cover properly. By elevation it is in the upper part of our Ontario listings. Start from Atikokan, 35 km down the road. Then Ignace, 83 km, and Ely, 108 km. It sits well inside the county, so one set of rules covers it.
Depth is not on record here, so the bank has to tell you. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Fish documented in Rainy River District include northern pike, smallmouth bass, yellow perch, walleye and white sucker. County records show what lives in the area; the local agency holds the water-by-water list. Anyone new to Sawmill Lake should walk it once before setting up.
The range across the year is -17°C to 18°C. A solid cap is the normal state through winter. Winter fishing happens on the ice here, with open water back around late April. The season between ice runs from about late April to mid November. Look to early summer and the first cool weeks of autumn. Plan any trip to Sawmill Lake around it.
Whether you may fish here is not something records settle. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. No made access is recorded, so a short walk in is the likely arrangement. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Rules differ from one water to the next round here. Signs go up and come down, so check on the day. If the gate is shut, Helmet Lake at 1.9 km is the nearest alternative. Check the current arrangement for Sawmill Lake.
