Flat light and a covered sky today, with the water lying quiet and steady pressure. Start the search at Sankey Lake along the calm side of the wind. Little to get excited about, though the morning holds a sliver of promise. Fish the best hour hard and keep the rest short. Fish follow the bait in autumn, so find one to find the other.

Sankey Lake is set in Cochrane District, Ontario. The bank is 234 metres above sea level. With some 27 hectares of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. The bank runs about 3.1 km all the way round, so one visit can cover most of it. Ground here is low by Ontario standards. The nearest town is Hearst, 42 km away. Then Kapuskasing, 61 km, and Smooth Rock Falls, 118 km. There is no boundary nearby to worry about.
The records we hold are silent on depth, so plan to find it yourself. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Fish documented in Cochrane District include northern pike, yellow perch and white sucker. Records at county level tell you what is around, not what is stocked here. On Sankey Lake that means starting tight and working out.
Long-term averages put July at about 16°C and January near -19°C. Winter runs most of the calendar, and everything worth doing happens in the gap. Ice fishing carries the winter, and the water opens about early May. The season between ice runs from about early May to mid November. The middle of summer slows a little, with dawn and dusk carrying it. Sankey Lake runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
Nothing on record says whether the bank is open or closed. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Nothing built is recorded close to the bank here. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Rules differ from one water to the next round here. Fishing rules and camping rules are set separately here. Failing this one, try Little Wanzatika Lake, 10 km away. Signs at Sankey Lake carry more weight than any list.
