Solid cloud cover today, with a decent SW wind working the banks and pressure going nowhere. Activity on Sandy Lake should centre on the weed line and any gaps in it. Quiet conditions all day, with the morning marginally better. Quiet tactics only; the fish will not chase today. Cooler water spreads fish back across the shallows.

In Ontario, Sandy Lake falls inside Peterborough County. What surrounds it is lake country bush. This is sizeable water at about 3.58 sq km, and a boat opens up most of it. The margin runs to about 13 km in total. Size puts it in the front rank of our Peterborough County list. Bobcaygeon lies 11 km from the water. Beyond it, Lakefield at 17 km and Fenelon Falls at 27 km. Local rules may differ a few miles either side of here.
Nothing we hold settles how deep this runs. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Open biodiversity records for Peterborough County list rock bass, pumpkinseed, smallmouth bass, muskellunge and bluegill. What holds for the county may not hold for this water. On Sandy Lake a short move beats a long cast.
Expect July near 20°C and January near -9°C on the long-run figures. The season turns properly here, and fish follow it closely. Firm cover through the cold months, then open water from mid April. Average temperatures cross freezing around mid April in spring and again near early December in autumn. Right after break-up, and again as the nights sharpen, is when to go. Expect Sandy Lake to follow that timing.
Nothing we hold confirms whether access is permitted. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Mapping records no facilities at all near this water. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Where a permit is needed, the nearest town usually sells it. Where parking is tight, arriving early solves most problems. If the gate is shut, Buckhorn Lake at 10 km is the nearest alternative. Nothing on Sandy Lake should be assumed from this page alone.
