Steady rain over the water today, with a soft WNW wind and pressure going nowhere. Expect most activity at Sand Lake around points where shallow meets deep. Numbers are low everywhere; the middle of the day is the pick of them. Take the small wins and call it early if it dies. The season of moving fish: stay mobile and watch for bait.

Sand Lake belongs to Algoma, Ontario. The bank is 367 metres above sea level. It measures some 3.43 sq km, and wind has room to build across it. Some 38 km of shoreline means conditions can differ from one end to the other. Few waters listed in Algoma are bigger. Wawa at 35 km is the nearest place to stop. Greater Sudbury sits 301 km out, and it is the nearest city worth the name. There is no boundary nearby to worry about.
Our records carry no depth, so judge it from the bank. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Reported across Algoma: walleye, northern pike, Iowa darter, yellow perch and white sucker. These are county-wide records, so not all of them will be in this water. On Sand Lake that means starting tight and working out.
Long-run averages give July about 16°C and January about -14°C. The middle months are generous; the ends are demanding. The freeze runs deep into the year, with break-up near late April. Averages place the thaw at late April and the freeze at mid November. Look to early summer and the first cool weeks of autumn. Anyone fishing Sand Lake regularly works to that calendar.
The paperwork position is blank for this one. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. No launch point is recorded nearby, so this is a bank water unless you carry a boat in. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Provincial rules still apply whatever the bank status. Where parking is tight, arriving early solves most problems. The nearest alternative is Tower Lake, 5.3 km out. None of that is settled for Sand Lake in what we hold.
