Flat light and a covered sky today, with a whisper of wind from the W with the glass holding level. The productive water at Rover Lake will be around the calm side of the wind. The useful hours run afternoon into evening. Stay patient; middling days often turn late. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Rover Lake is one of the Sudbury waters in Ontario. The surface lies 425 metres up. At about 80 hectares, a day is enough to walk the shoreline properly. Shoreline length is close to 6.6 km, and each section fishes a little differently. Chapleau lies 83 km from the water. Elliot Lake is 90 km away, with Blind River at 109 km. One jurisdiction covers this water end to end.
Depth is not on record here, which means reading the ground instead. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. County-wide records name smallmouth bass, northern pike, yellow perch and Iowa darter. County records show what lives in the area; the local agency holds the water-by-water list. Fish Rover Lake where the bottom changes rather than where it looks deep.
The year swings from about -14°C in January to roughly 17°C in July. The freeze arrives properly here and holds. The lid usually sets by midwinter and gives way around late April. Break-up sits around late April on average, with the water closing again about late November. The open run goes from the thaw to the freeze, and April through October covers most of it. The season on Rover Lake follows the weather closely.
Nothing we hold confirms whether access is permitted. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Nothing in the way of made access shows up nearby: no ramp, no car park, no path. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Where the road in crosses private land, ask first. Signs go up and come down, so check on the day. Moule Lake sits 1.9 km off and takes the overflow. Confirm access to Rover Lake locally before you travel.
