A closed sky with even light today, with an easy breeze from the WSW and steady pressure. The fish at Ross Lake are likely to sit near the calm side of the wind. A tough forecast; the morning offers the only real chance. Treat it as a scouting trip with a rod in hand. Cooler water spreads fish back across the shallows.

Ross Lake is one of the Nipissing District listings for Ontario. The country round it is lake country bush from end to end. The water covers some 62 hectares, so pick a bank rather than trying to cover it all. The whole outline is near 4.5 km, and most of it is walkable. For supplies, Ville-Marie is 40 km out. Témiscaming is 46 km away, with Notre-Dame-du-Lac at 46 km. The nearest edge is a long way off, so local rules apply throughout.
Depth here is unknown, so count the lead down before committing. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Open biodiversity records for Nipissing District list smallmouth bass, cisco and yellow perch. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. At Ross Lake the water rewards a slow, careful approach.
The seasonal spread runs -15°C to 18°C. The middle months are generous; the ends are demanding. Winter fishing happens on the ice here, with open water back around late April. From about late April to around late November, expect open water on the long-run figures. September and October fish steadily right up to the freeze. Keep it in mind when planning a trip to Ross Lake.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Mapping shows no built access close by; expect to walk in from wherever you can leave the car. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Check locally before you travel, because a wasted drive is a long one. Fishing rules and camping rules are set separately here. The nearest alternative is Maxam Lake, 3 km out. Ask locally about Ross Lake if anything is unclear.
