Rope Lake near Schreiber: Fishing Spots, Seasons and Access

• Overview

  Rope Lake is one of the Thunder Bay District listings for Ontario. Height above sea level is 440 metres. About 1.47 sq km, so local knowledge or a boat saves a lot of walking. With 17 km or so of shoreline, boat anglers cover ground the bank cannot. It sits higher than most water we list in Ontario. Schreiber sits 26 km from the bank. Terrace Bay follows at 33 km, then Nipigon at 69 km. The county line is nowhere near, so one local authority covers the water.

• Where to Fish on Rope Lake

  Without a survey to go on, judge depth from how the bank falls away. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. County-wide records name cisco, blackfin cisco, rainbow smelt, bloater and shortjaw cisco. Species recorded across the county may be limited to a few waters. Rope Lake repays a walk before the first cast.

• Seasonal Patterns

  Seasonal averages run from -17°C in January up to 16°C in July. Ice holds for a long stretch, so the open weeks matter more here than further south. Firm cover through the cold months, then open water from early May. The lid tends to go about early May and return around mid November. May into June fishes hardest, and September gives a second good stretch before the lid returns. On Rope Lake that shapes the whole year.

• Tackle & Baits

  Nothing we hold confirms whether access is permitted. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. We find no slipway, car park or made path within a short radius, so treat access as rough. Keep the gear simple: light line, small hooks, split shot and a couple of proven lures. Some banks are open only from a marked point. A polite question at the farm gate opens more banks than anything else. For a change of water, Burslem Lake is 1.9 km distant. Treat Rope Lake as unsettled until someone local tells you otherwise.
