A crisp, open sky after dark, with stillness over the whole water and no real change in pressure. Expect most activity at Redfox Lake around the first drop-off and weed lines. Make the middle of the day the heart of the trip. Commit to the pattern once the first fish shows. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

Look for Redfox Lake in the Thunder Bay District part of Ontario. The bank is 462 metres above sea level. At about 60 hectares, a day is enough to walk the shoreline properly. Shoreline comes to about 4.9 km, small enough to learn in a day. By elevation it is in the upper part of our Ontario listings. Nearest town is Atikokan, 66 km off. Grand Marais lies 85 km off, Ely another 93 km. There is no boundary nearby to worry about.
Depth is not on record here, so the bank has to tell you. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Thunder Bay District records list cisco, blackfin cisco, rainbow smelt and bloater among the fish reported. Species recorded across the county may be limited to a few waters. Redfox Lake repays a walk before the first cast.
July runs about 18°C on average, January about -16°C. Seasons are distinct, and each one fishes differently. Winter fishing happens on the ice here, with open water back around late April. Going by climate averages, expect open water from about late April until roughly mid November. Right after break-up, and again as the nights sharpen, is when to go. Redfox Lake fishes to that pattern most years.
Access is not recorded for this water. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. There is no recorded infrastructure here; expect to find your own way in. Keep the gear simple: light line, small hooks, split shot and a couple of proven lures. Check whether a boat is allowed before you tow one. Access can change hands, so last year's answer may not hold. If the gate is shut, Pats Lake at 0.9 km is the nearest alternative. Nothing here settles the position at Redfox Lake for certain.
