An even grey lid over the water, with a decent W wind working the banks with a settled glass. On Red Lake, work the seam between weed and open water first. Expect the better fishing from morning through afternoon. Work fewer spots, but work them properly. Fish follow the bait in autumn, so find one to find the other.

Red Lake is a Peterborough County water, Ontario side. The bank is 314 metres above sea level. Surface area is around 18 hectares, which gives you real water without needing a boat. The full circuit measures close to 3.0 km on foot. The closest town, Bobcaygeon, is 32 km away. It is 104 km to Oshawa, the nearest city. The nearest boundary is well away, so one set of rules covers the water.
No depth figure has reached our records, which makes a plummet useful. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Species logged across Peterborough County include rock bass, pumpkinseed, smallmouth bass, muskellunge and bluegill. Read it as a county summary, not a water-by-water list. At Red Lake light and wind decide more than tackle does.
Climate normals give 19°C for July and -10°C for January. Winter puts a hard lid on this one. Hard water holds through the cold months, breaking up near mid April. The open-water window runs from around mid April to about early December in an average year. June through September is the settled part of the year, with the shoulders busier for fish. Red Lake runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
The rules here are undocumented as far as public sources go. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. Nothing in the way of made access shows up nearby: no ramp, no car park, no path. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Parking is often the real limit rather than the bank itself. Keep proof of licence with you rather than in the car. Failing this one, try Poplar Lake, 2.1 km away. Check the position at Red Lake before loading the car.
