An even grey lid over the water, with flat calm through the day and pressure going nowhere. Whatever swims in Rainy Lake should be near bays that hold the day's warmth. Make the night the heart of the trip. Fish tidy and take what the day gives. Shortening days concentrate the feeding into fewer hours.

Ontario holds Rainy Lake, in Parry Sound District. It stands 305 metres above sea level. It measures some 2.58 sq km, and wind has room to build across it. Some 10 km of bank gives room to move when the wind turns. On our Parry Sound District list it sits near the top for size. You are 31 km from Huntsville. The nearest city of size is Barrie, 127 km away. The nearest boundary is a fair way off.
No depth figure has reached our records, which makes a plummet useful. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. Fish documented in Parry Sound District include smallmouth bass, pumpkinseed and yellow perch. It is the county picture; the agency list is water-specific. The shape of Rainy Lake rewards a slow walk along one bank.
Averages move between -11°C in January and 18°C in July. Expect a real winter and a strong spring after it. After late April the shallows warm and the fish move up. Ice clears near late April and comes back about early December in a typical year. The strongest runs come at either end of the open season. On Rainy Lake the same rules apply, with local timing.
Nothing on record says whether the bank is open or closed. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. There is no mapped parking or launch nearby, which keeps numbers down. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Look for a notice board at the entrance. Where the way in crosses private ground, ask first. Harrison Lake sits 5.9 km off and takes the overflow. None of that is settled for Rainy Lake in what we hold.
