A clear night sky over the water, with a soft W wind and the barometer holding steady. Most of the action on Puzzle Bay should come off banks where bait gets pushed by the flow. If you pick one session, make it the middle of the day. Settle in and let the day develop. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

Puzzle Bay is a Kenora District water, Ontario side. The water sits 382 metres up. Surface area runs to some 13.83 sq km, so a boat and a plan are both worth having. Around 57 km of margin, so directions matter more than a general plan. Few waters listed in Kenora District are bigger. The town to know is Vermilion Bay, 39 km out. Then Dryden, 42 km, and Sioux Lookout, 74 km. It sits well inside its county, with no border complications.
We hold no depth figure for this one. The channel is where water moves, and fish follow it. The mouth fishes hardest when the run is at its strongest. Fish documented in Kenora District include northern pike, longnose sucker, white sucker, johnny darter and logperch. County records show what lives in the area; the local agency holds the water-by-water list. Fish Puzzle Bay where the bottom changes rather than where it looks deep.
Climate records put July near 18°C and January near -18°C. The freeze arrives properly here and holds. The lid usually sets by midwinter and gives way around late April. On the long-run averages the water opens up around late April and starts locking again about mid November. Fishing peaks soon after break-up and again before the cold returns. At Puzzle Bay the season follows that pattern closely.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. Nothing built is recorded close to the bank here. For the pike, wire up and throw larger lures along the weed edges. Gates get locked out of season on water like this. Close seasons apply to some species and not others. Should this one be busy, Glorious Lake is 3.5 km off. Check the position at Puzzle Bay before loading the car.
