Flat light and a covered sky today, with a busy WNW wind on the open water with a settled glass. The water to cover at Pup Lakes is the margins and the shelf beyond them. Expectations low today; if anything moves, it will be in the morning. Fish the best hour hard and keep the rest short. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

This water sits in Timiskaming District, Ontario. The surroundings are taiga. Roughly 13 hectares: a morning covers one end, an afternoon the other. The bank runs about 2.8 km all the way round, so one visit can cover most of it. Start from Timmins, 24 km down the road. It is 208 km to Greater Sudbury, the nearest city. No county line comes close, which keeps the paperwork simple.
No published figure covers depth, so learn it as you fish. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Species logged across Timiskaming District include brook trout, northern pike, yellow perch and Iowa darter. These are county-wide records, so not all of them will be in this water. The shape of Pup Lakes decides where the fish sit.
Expect July to average close to 17°C, with January the cold end at about -17°C. This is a two-season water: locked, then wide open. The freeze runs deep into the year, with break-up near early May. Averages suggest open water from about early May through to roughly mid November. The strong weeks are the first after break-up and the last before the freeze. Anyone fishing Pup Lakes regularly works to that calendar.
No access rule appears in what we hold. Mapping shows a picnic spot within 1.3 km. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Check locally before you travel, because a wasted drive is a long one. Some water is controlled locally without a sign saying so. Mahoney Lake, 7.5 km away, makes the obvious fallback. Nothing on Pup Lakes should be assumed from this page alone.
