Light moving in and out all day, with a consistent blow out of the SW and the barometer holding steady. Start the search at Proulx Lake along the calm side of the wind. Little to get excited about, though the morning holds a sliver of promise. Fish the best hour hard and keep the rest short.

Nipissing District, Ontario, is where Proulx Lake sits. The surface lies 390 metres up. At some 3.81 sq km it is far too large to cover on foot in a day. The margin runs to about 16 km in total. It ranks high for size among our Nipissing District listings. The closest town, United Townships of Dysart, Dudley, Harcourt, Guilford, Harburn, Bruton, Havelock, Eyre and Clyde, is 64 km distant. Further out sit Mattawa (64 km) and South River (77 km). No county line comes close, which keeps the paperwork simple.
The records we hold are silent on depth, so plan to find it yourself. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Nipissing District records list smallmouth bass, cisco, yellow perch, pumpkinseed and rock bass among the fish reported. Records at county level tell you what is around, not what is stocked here. On Proulx Lake that means starting tight and working out.
Climate normals give 18°C for July and -13°C for January. Winter shuts the surface down for months. Look for the thaw near late April; the fishing lifts straight after. The open-water window runs from around late April to about late November in an average year. Reckon on open water from spring through to late autumn, with May and June the strongest. Plan any trip to Proulx Lake around it.
No access rule appears in what we hold. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. Mapping shows a campsite some 260 m from the water. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Sort the permit out before you load the car. Close seasons apply to some species and not others. If the gate is shut, Murdock Lake at 1.7 km is the nearest alternative. Treat access at Proulx Lake as something to verify.
