Dull, settled light over the water, with light air out of the WNW with a settled glass. On Pointer Lake, work the seam between weed and open water first. The best of it runs afternoon into evening. Small adjustments will matter more than big moves. Fish follow the bait in autumn, so find one to find the other.

Pointer Lake is one of the Algoma listings for Ontario. Everything around it is mixed forest. It runs to roughly 30 hectares — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. Shoreline length is close to 5.2 km, and each section fishes a little differently. It sits higher than most water we list in Ontario. The closest town, Elliot Lake, is 54 km away. Blind River follows at 63 km, then Thessalon at 64 km. One jurisdiction covers this water end to end.
Without a survey to go on, judge depth from how the bank falls away. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Records held for Algoma cover walleye, northern pike and Iowa darter. County records show the wider picture rather than this one place. Pointer Lake repays a walk before the first cast.
July runs about 18°C on average, January about -13°C. A solid cap is the normal state through winter. Winter locks it down, and late April brings it back. On the long-run averages the water opens up around late April and starts locking again about late November. The strong weeks are the first after break-up and the last before the freeze. The season on Pointer Lake rarely departs from it.
No access rule appears in what we hold. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. Nothing is listed nearby for parking or launching a boat. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Bank access can be seasonal on ground like this. Signs go up and come down, so check on the day. For a change of water, Spot Lake is 1.7 km distant. Where Pointer Lake is concerned, a local answer beats a written one.
