Flat light and a covered sky today, with a whisper of wind from the W and pressure sitting still. Most of the action on Pilot Lake should come off any hard bottom among the soft. Everything points to the middle of the day. Give the likely spots time before moving. Fish follow the bait in autumn, so find one to find the other.

Pilot Lake is one of the Algoma listings for Ontario. The bank is 304 metres above sea level. Around 21 hectares of surface means several distinct areas to work. About 3.9 km of bank, so nothing stays unexplored for long. For a base, Wawa sits 52 km out. Further out sit Chapleau (106 km) and Sault Ste. Marie (116 km). The nearest boundary is a fair way off.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Records held for Algoma cover walleye, northern pike, Iowa darter and yellow perch. These are county-wide records, so not all of them will be in this water. Work Pilot Lake in sections rather than trying to cover it.
Expect July near 16°C and January near -13°C on the long-run figures. The year splits cleanly: hard water, then open water. Count on hard cover from midwinter, and open water from late April. Averages place the thaw at late April and the freeze at late November. June through September is the settled part of the year, with the shoulders busier for fish. Anyone fishing Pilot Lake regularly works to that calendar.
Our records carry no access rule either way. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. The map shows no ramp or car park nearby, so this is a walk-in water. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Take the rules with you rather than trusting memory. Where the way in crosses private ground, ask first. Should this one be busy, Ursa Major Lake is 0.8 km off. Nothing here settles the position at Pilot Lake for certain.
